South East Queenslanders now have more opportunities to enjoy the region’s lakes this summer with extended recreation hours and the creation of a new outdoor playground at Wivenhoe Dam.

Billies Bay and Hays Landing are located on the eastern side of Lake Wivenhoe and have been transformed into a new recreation destination catering for BBQs, picnics, swimming, fishing, paddling and sailing.

Minister for Water Supply Mark Bailey said the new recreation area will be opened to the public from tomorrow (Saturday 10 December).

“Wivenhoe Dam is renowned for its spectacular scenery and the new recreation areas will provide public access to areas of the lake normally off limits,” Mr Bailey said.

“Billies Bay and Hays Landing will collectively boast a double lane boat ramp as well as swimming and picnic facilities.

“I’m also pleased to announce Seqwater has extended its recreational opening hours to allow visitors to enjoy an extra hour of outdoor fun each day, following a trial of seasonal operating hours.

“As a result of positive community feedback, the extended hours have now been made permanent, which will help boost tourism and visitor numbers across SEQ.

The longer recreation hours also mean more opportunities for people to get outdoors and enjoy what our region has to offer.’

The new spring and summer opening hours will be from 5.30am to 6.30pm from September to April. Seqwater’s previous opening hours were from 6am-6pm. The new autumn and winter hours will be from 6am to 5.30pm from May to August.

Mr Bailey said more than 2.6 million people visit the region’s lakes and surrounding catchments each year.
