Commonwealth Games on Track for 2018

With 481 days to go until the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games (GC2018), the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) has delivered a glowing endorsement of Games preparations. 

The regular review, which was delivered today as part of the sixth Coordination Commission (CoCom) on the Gold Coast, highlighted strengths in planning pace and organisational readiness, community engagement, security, legacy and progress of venue construction and quality.

Commonwealth Games Minister Stirling Hinchliffe welcomed the Commission’s assessment that the Games remained on time and on budget. 

“This latest report card from the CGF confirms once again that we are Games-ready,” the Minister said. 

“It is another vote of confidence from CoCom members and demonstrates the strong progress we’ve made since the last review in May 2016.” 

Minister Hinchliffe highlighted the importance of ongoing and continued collaboration between partners, including the CGF, Commonwealth Games Australia, the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Organising Corporation (GOLDOC), City of Gold Coast, the Australian Government and Queensland Government. 

“This type of cross-partner collaboration will ensure a great legacy for our city, our state and our country,” Minister Hinchliffe said. 

“I look forward to further close engagement with the CGF as we approach the critical final stages of Games preparations.” 

The CGF also recognised the work achieved by the Event Cities of Brisbane, Cairns and Townsville, and community benefits for these regions with the North Queensland cities hosting the preliminary basketball rounds for the Games.

Minister Hinchliffe said the $320 million Games venues program was on time and on budget, with all competition venues on track to be delivered at least 12 months ahead of the Games.

“In the past year I have opened several world-class facilities, including the $15.5 million Village Roadshow Sound Stage 9, $40 million Coomera Indoor Sports Centre and $59 million Anna Meares Velodrome,” Minister Hinchliffe said. 

“The Velodrome was described by CGF Vice President Bruce Robertson as an incredible investment in the community and the future of cycling in Queensland.

“Upgraded venues, including the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre and Broadbeach Bowls Club, are also complete.” 

“The Palaszczuk Government recognises the importance of continuity, commitment and the importance of collaboration between partners as we move towards the Games to ensure we deliver the best Commonwealth Games and an enduring legacy for our state.” 

The Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games will run from 4 - 15 April 2018.
