Staff and students at Queensland schools are celebrating a successful and record-breaking year as they prepare for a well-earned break, Education Minister Kate Jones said today.

Ms Jones said the Palaszczuk Government’s commitment to education outcomes was paying dividends for Queensland students.

“This year we invested a record $9.1 billion into education and early childhood education in Queensland and it’s making a difference in our classrooms,” she said.

“Our NAPLAN results were the best ever, with improvements in student performance in 15 out of 20 test areas.

“We saw record kindergarten participation of 95% after we committed more than $43 million to keep kindy affordable for Queensland families.

“We’ve also made Prep compulsory from next year, because we know how important this year is in giving students a positive start to their education.”

Ms Jones said the Government had also been delivering on its commitment to support teachers, school leaders and school staff in the great work they do.

“We know the foundation of a great education system is its teachers and school leaders,” she said.

“That’s why this year we employed 290 extra teachers as part of our commitment of 875 teachers above growth over three years.

“We are also making sure they have the support and professional development opportunities they need to provide the best-possible education to Queensland students.

“This year for the first time we offered teachers the opportunity to upskill in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) subjects through our partnership with QUT and Griffith University.

“Both rounds were oversubscribed and more than 2500 teachers have taken the opportunity to develop their skills.

“As part of our commitment to STEM we also set up the STEM Hub and Queensland Coding Academy and selected regional STEM champions.”

Ms Jones said the Palaszczuk Government’s record $667 million capital works and maintenance program was providing students with quality learning environments.

“The year kicked off with four new primary schools opening in Caboolture West, Griffin, Deebing Heights and Pallara,” she said.

“We know how important quality classrooms and learning areas are to providing a quality education.

“That’s why we’re delivering upgrades and new classrooms across the state where they are needed most.”

Ms Jones said she wished all students and school staff a safe and enjoyable holidays.

“Everyone involved in Queensland schools can be proud of their achievements this year and I know 2017 will bring even more success,” she said.
