Tenders are opening today for a new disability housing project in Far North Queensland, bringing jobs and more accommodation options to the region.

Disability Services Minister Coralee O’Rourke said today’s tender was part of the Palaszczuk Government’s $3.3 million commitment to delivering better housing options to Queenslanders with disability.

“All Queenslanders deserve a safe and secure home that meets their needs,” she said.

“We know how important it is to provide quality, specialist disability accommodation that allows people with disability to live in their community, close to family and friends.

“This purpose built accommodation will provide two local people who have high and complex needs with the accommodation they need.

“This is a win-win for the region, as it will also mean more jobs for the Far North, where we know unemployment is too high.

“I encourage local contractors to get their tenders in to make the most of this opportunity.”

Mrs O’Rourke said today’s tender announcement followed last week’s launch of the ‘Towards an all abilities Queensland’ consultation for Queensland’s new disability plan.

“Queenslanders can now have their say on our new disability plan, which will pave the way for a brighter future for people with disability in our state,” Mrs O’Rourke said.

“We want to hear from you about how we can bring together all levels of government, business and the community to make sure people with disability have more opportunities to work, socialise, travel, and participate in our community.

“Now is our opportunity to drive change and break down systemic and social barriers to ensure Queenslanders with disability have a better future, without discrimination in the community.”

The Far North Queensland disability accommodation tender is due to close on Monday 16 January 2017.  More information is available at: www.communities.qld.gov.au/gateway/funding-grants/funding-available
