Santa is coming for Queensland’s kids in care thanks to a more than $32,000 donation boost from Southeast Queensland’s construction industry workers.

Child Safety Minister Shannon Fentiman visited the Brisbane region Child Safety office with the Plumbers Union Queensland today to accept more than 2300 pressies for the Kids in Care Christmas gift drive.

“This is an incredible effort by our hardworking construction industry workers and I know their donations will go a long way to making a brighter and happier Christmas for our children and young people who live in care,” Ms Fentiman said.

“Thank you to everyone who made a donation to the drive.

“I know this generous act will be appreciated not only by our children and young people, but by their families, foster carers and loved ones.

“I often say it takes a village to raise healthy and happy kids. The generosity of construction industry employees throughout the month of November tells me our village is full of big hearts who want to share in the Christmas spirit. Thank you.”

Plumbers Union Queensland secretary Gary O’Halloran said workers doubled the amount raised last year by hosting barbecues at building sites throughout the state’s southeast corner.

“I just want to say a big thank you for all the construction industry workers out there and our industry partners,” he said.

“It’s a great show of support and it’s incredible to see how it has grown since we first started making donations to the appeal four years ago.

“For it to grow into what it has is just incredible and it’s an amazing contribution from our blue-collar workers.”

Workers from across the construction industry donated to the Kids in Care Christmas gift drive, including union members, builders, contractors, training organisations, law firms and employee associations.

Ms Fentiman said there was still time to make a donation.

“Suitable presents are items to the value of about $20 and things like toys, books, gift cards, sports equipment, board games and clothes,” she said.
