Australia Day 2017 preparations are well advanced

Another State-wide program of events and celebrations are being planned for Australia Day next month, Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said.

“Australia Day is an important event for all Australians.  It’s an opportunity to reflect on what it means to be Australian,” the Premier said.

“It is also an opportunity for families, friends and communities to come together.  I love Australia Day and I am planning to celebrate  it again in Townsville.”

The Premier said the program of events and celebrations across the State, including those supported by the Government include:

·       Great Australian Bites – Brisbane (Thursday, 26 January – Saturday, 28 January). A food and music festival based at South Bank Parklands.  Free entry and activities;

·       Great Australian Bites – regional program, including Airlie Beach, Longreach, Port Douglas (Thursday, 26 January).  A one-day version of the food and music festival held regionally.  Free entry and activities;

·       Australia Day Flag Raising Ceremony – Townsville (Thursday 26 January).  Traditional Flag Raising Ceremony including guard of honour, gun salute and flypast.  Free to public;

·       Australia Day Ambassador Program – high-achieving Queenslanders will participate in regional council Australia Day events across the State.  Currently 48 ambassadors and 36 councils are confirmed, with 53 events being attended by ambassadors; and

·       Australia Day in the Office –National Australian Day Council-led program encouraging businesses to celebrate Australia Day with their colleagues.  Downloadable event kits and prize packs offered to submitted events.
