The Honourable Mark Ryan

The safety of the Malanda community has been boosted, with frontline police doubled in the Atherton Tableland town.

Police Minister Mark Ryan said the Palaszczuk Government had already delivered on its election commitment to provide 266 extra police statewide.

“This Government is addressing crime across the State, including far north Queensland,” he said.

Minister Ryan said two positions for either constables or senior constables to join the Malanda Station were today advertised in the Queensland Police Service (QPS) Gazette.

“Malanda is a great part of far north Queensland and I have no doubt police will have officers lining up to move there to take up these roles,” he said.

“I acknowledge the Member for Dalrymple Shane Knuth’s advocacy for more police in Malanda.

“A further three police will join the Tablelands Patrol Group once they graduate from the Townsville Academy in December. One officer will be stationed at Atherton and two at Mareeba.”

Minister Ryan said the Tablelands Patrol Group policing presence went back to the 1880s.

“Outback policing is an integral part of the QPS,” he said.

“Malanda, and the wider Tablelands, focuses on rural and remote communities, with a dedicated Stock Investigation Squad based in Mareeba.”
