More than 5000 foster and kinship carers across Queensland are being recognised for their tireless commitment to protecting the state’s most vulnerable children in 2016.

Child Safety Minister Shannon Fentiman thanked all Queensland foster and kinship carers for opening their homes and hearts to children in need.

“These 5000 individuals and families are the backbone of our child protection system,” she said.

“They provide a haven for more than 8000 children in Queensland who cannot live at home.

“Queensland’s response to children in need, would simply not be able to occur if it were not for the dedication and commitment of our foster and kinship carers.”

Ms Fentiman urged Queenslanders to take a moment this Christmas to think about the state’s generous carers, and acknowledge the work they do in the community.

“The continued support and care of our foster and kinship carers will ensure children in their care have a brighter Christmas and a more positive New Year,” she said.

Ms Fentiman encouraged other families to consider becoming foster and kinship carers in 2017.

“As we look back over the year that’s been, I am pleased to say more Queenslanders are opening their homes to children in need,” she said.

“Through our ‘it starts with care’ campaign, more and more Queenslanders are showing their support for children in need.

“But we are always looking for more people who want to play a part in keeping Queensland’s children and young people safe and supported so that they can reach their full potential,” she said.

“It’s an important decision for any family, but can bring enormous personal reward from being able to play such a pivotal role in a vulnerable child’s life.”
