Joint Statement Queensland Government and Queensland Indian community

Following a ceremony to honour the life of Manmeet Sharma at the INDOZ Sikh Community Centre at 16 Rosemary Street, Inala today, Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk MP issued the below statement on behalf of the Queensland Government and the Queensland Indian community

“The Queensland Government and the Queensland Indian community stand united in expressing our deepest sorrow at the tragic and senseless death of Mr Manmeet Sharma, also known as Manmeet Alisher, who died while serving the community that he loved.

Mr Alisher was regarded as a respected Australian citizen of Indian heritage who served the community professionally and personally with immense commitment and dignity. He was well known as a talented and creative emerging leader.

There has been an outpouring of shock and grief from all parts of Queensland’s diverse community.

However, it is at times like this when the strength, cohesiveness and resilience of Queensland’s diverse community shines through and when people of all backgrounds stand together united in grief, reaching out to support each other in times of need.

The impact of Mr Alisher’s death has been felt not just in Australia and India but also across the world. Our deepest condolences go out to Mr Alisher’s family, friends, colleagues and community and to all those who have been affected.

The Queensland Government and the Queensland Indian community have the utmost confidence in our open and transparent justice system. We are jointly committed to keeping the broader community informed as the investigation into this senseless tragedy is undertaken.

The Queensland Government, our valued Indian community and business organisations will continue to support the community as we come to terms with, and heal from, this event.
