Queenslanders will have the opportunity to run their rulers over the state’s building and construction industry with the release of a discussion paper for a new Queensland Building Plan.

Minister for Housing and Public Works Mick de Brenni said that the Queensland Building Plan consultation was an opportunity for industry and consumers to help shape the course of the state’s $44 billion building industry.

“We have a strong, modern and vibrant building industry and this government is committed to making sure the sector continues to grow and develop.

“The Queensland Building Plan looks at a number of reforms designed to bring increased confidence to the sector, including our government’s historic reforms on security of payment for subcontractors.”

Mr de Brenni said that the discussion paper covers of a range of areas including a review of licencing and plumbing and drainage laws, the potential for a single state housing code and the sustainability of buildings.

“Industry has been keen on a single housing or development code for a long time and it’s time to have an open and public discussion about the merits of such a code,” Mr de Brenni said.

“Many home owners across the state have expressed concerns about the operation of the QBCC Home Warranty Scheme and we want to hear from as many Queenslanders as possible to make sure that it is in line with community expectations.

“The Queensland Building Plan discussion paper brings all of these areas of reform together so that people can have their say.”

Mr de Brenni said that the discussion paper was the result of extensive consultation with industry and that the government would be rolling out a comprehensive consultation program through early 2017.

“I want to hear from home owners, from builders, from subcontractors, licensees, industry groups and local governments about each of these proposals.

“My department will be running public consultation sessions right across the state, and I encourage everyone to get along and have their say.

“Ultimately the Queensland Building Plan is about create the right settings to make sure we all reap the benefits of a strong and prosperous building and construction sector.”
