Trial access for Type 2 Road Trains to Roma Saleyards has ended

A three-month trial extending access through Roma for Type 2 Road Trains ended at midnight on Saturday.

Main Roads and Road Safety Minister Mark Bailey said hours of operation for Type 2 Road Trains have returned to normal while data collected throughout the trial was analysed.

“This data will allow us to monitor and assess effectiveness of extending access for road trains carrying livestock on the Warrego Highway between the Roma breakdown pad and Roma Saleyards,” Mr Bailey said.

“Usually Type 2 Road Trains on this route are restricted to operating between 7pm and 5.30am. However, the trial extended existing operational times on Sundays.

“We are always looking at ways to improve efficiency on our road network and increase the safety of motorists and livestock.

“Outcomes of the trial will be finalised by early January next year.”

Mr Bailey said current traffic data supported requests from the livestock industry to open all-day access for Type 2 Road Trains carrying livestock to the Saleyards on Sundays.

“We invested $370,000 to upgrade intersections in Roma allowing Type 2 Road Trains carrying livestock access between the breakdown pad and Roma Saleyards in November last year,” Mr Bailey said.

“Type 2 Road Trains are also able to travel safely between Morven and Charleville after a $110,000 project to widen the intersection of Warrego and Landsborough highways.

“These upgrades are creating a significant increase in freight movement activity and we will continue to look at ways we can provide a safe and efficient road network right across the State.”
