Minister for Police, Fire and Emergency Services and Minister for Corrective Services
The Honourable Mark Ryan

Police Minister Mark Ryan and Commissioner Ian Stewart today announced a new Chief Superintendent position for Townsville.

Minister Ryan said the Queensland Police Service would recruit for the position as soon as possible.

“The Chief Superintendent will be the most senior officer within the Townsville Police District,” Minister Ryan said.

“This new role will take a strategic approach to addressing crime in the Townsville community.

“I thank and support the existing police within the Townsville District for their efforts in tackling crime on a daily basis and I look forward to them continuing under the leadership of a Chief Superintendent.”

Commissioner Stewart said the assignment of a Chief Superintendent position to the Townsville Police District was recognition of the significant challenges facing police in the area and mirrored the police leadership in areas like the Gold Coast, Logan, Brisbane and Cairns.

“The Chief Superintendent is an extra layer to assist frontline and operational police in stopping crime and making the Townsville community safer. The appointee will work directly with the leaders of other government departments to coordinate resources and priorities for the area,” Commissioner Stewart said.

“It is a permanent position and has been allocated over and above the current number of police positions in the district.”

The role will report directly to Northern Region Assistant Commissioner Paul Taylor.
