Funding extends the hand of friendship to more children

 Vulnerable children in south-east Queensland will continue to be mentored and supported by caring and dedicated volunteers as part of a program that creates long-term friendships for children who need extra support.

Child Safety Minister Shannon Fentiman said she was delighted the Queensland Government was providing $50,000 to Aunties and Uncles Queensland so it could continue its successful mentoring program for children aged 1-11 years.

“This wonderful program involves vulnerable and socially isolated children being linked with volunteer aunties and uncles to form long-term friendships and extend the support network in children’s lives,” she said.

“The volunteers are a positive and stable influence on the children and make them feel special through plenty of one-on-one attention and by providing new and fun experiences.

“This can make a world of difference to children who might have challenges at home or whose families may not have an extended family, like grandparents, or social networks to call on for support.”

Aunties and Uncles Queensland has been operating for more than 10 years, and the program is currently helping around 80 children.

Ms Fentiman said funding from the Palaszczuk Government would allow the program to continue into the future and help even more children.

“We know it takes a village to raise a child and everyone can play a role in improving the well-being of children and young people,” she said.

“The volunteer aunties and uncles are a wonderful part of the village and are playing their part to keep children safe and supported.

“The Aunties and Uncles Program complements our efforts to provide the best possible early intervention and prevention services and support to keep families at home together safely whenever possible.

“That’s why I am so pleased that our funding will ensure this outstanding program remains available to more Queensland children.”
