Premier gains insights into Kawasaki station redevelopment

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk was hosted by the Deputy Mayor of Kawasaki City, Mr Atsushi Miura, as she visited the Kawasaki railway station and surrounding commercial development mid-way through her trade mission to Japan.

“I am here to gain an understanding of how the Kawasaki government has successfully balanced the need for transport infrastructure with commercial development at one of Japan’s busiest stations,” Ms Palaszczuk said.

“I was very grateful today to meet with Deputy Mayor Miura and receive a briefing on the Kawasaki region, which has a population of 1.45 million people and grew 3.4 per cent in 2010-2015, the highest in the country.

“This growth is reflected in the size of the Kawasaki station, which has 280,000 passengers using it each day.

“The Kawasaki government had the foresight to develop the area around the station from an industrial area to a booming commercial and transport hub.

“There are a number of fantastic initiatives in this city that we could potentially implement in Queensland, such as their environmental technologies and the biotech hub.

“The Queensland Government has a Memorandum of Understanding with Kawasaki City, which was signed in July 2011 to collaborate in clean technology and waste and water resource management. Today, Deputy Mayor Miura and I discussed how we can further expand this relationship.”

The Premier is promoting existing and new trade and investment opportunities in a range of industry sectors including resources, horticulture, education, tourism, infrastructure and advanced technology.
