The Palaszczuk Government has invited local governments across Queensland to apply for grant funding for cycling infrastructure projects.

Main Roads and Road Safety Minister Mark Bailey said applications were now open for the Cycle Network Local Government Grants program, helping to build a safer and more connected cycle network in Queensland.

“The Palaszczuk Government is committed to investing in cycling infrastructure to make it easier and safer for more people to ride bikes across Queensland,” Mr Bailey said.

“The Cycle Network Local Government Grants program provides funding to councils for local cycling infrastructure projects.

“Successful projects will deliver better facilities for cyclists, improve the safety and convenience of local cycle networks and encourage more people to cycle.

“The previous round of cycle grants is building almost 50km of cycling infrastructure across Queensland.”

Mr Bailey said councils could apply for state matched funding for projects if the area had an endorsed Principal Cycle Network Plan (PCNP).

“A PCNP identifies the best way to achieve a connected cycle network by mapping current and future cycle routes,” he said.

“48 local governments in Queensland have a PNCP from Torres Shire Council to Goondiwindi Regional Council and City of Gold Coast Council.”

Mr Bailey said more than 760,000 Queenslanders ride a bicycle each week.

“Investment in safer cycling infrastructure helps people to enjoy active and healthy travel around their community,” he said.

The Palaszczuk Government invested nearly $37 million into cycling infrastructure in 2015-16 across Queensland.
