A report into Queensland’s science and innovation ecosystem has found that the State has much to celebrate.

Minister for Innovation, Science and the Digital Economy said the Health of Queensland Science and Innovation 2016 report, prepared by the Office of the Queensland Chief Scientist, highlights Queensland’s science strengths and innovation opportunities.

“The Palaszczuk Government’s $405 million whole-of-government Advance Queensland program has boosted investments in research and development, both within and outside government, helping to establish strong capability areas across Queensland,” Ms Enoch said.

“This report emphasises the need to build upon past investments such as Labor’s previous Smart State program, with a greater focus now on research translation and innovation.

“We need to produce more STEM-qualified Queenslanders to help fill the knowledge-based jobs of the future.”

The report considers Queensland, national and international data with contributions from the education, business, science and innovation sectors.

Queensland Chief Scientist Dr Geoff Garrett said the report found that while much has been achieved – great research and development, exciting and promising collaborations, and innovative companies – we can’t afford to be complacent.

“This report is the third in a series that began in 2013 and I’m delighted to say that strong progress is being made in an area that is vital to Queenslanders’ prosperity, now and into the future,” Dr Garrett said.

“We must also keep encouraging our researchers and industry colleagues to develop productive and lasting relationships to help ramp up innovation and research translation.”
