Design set to begin on new Palm Island primary health facility

Detailed design work will begin next month for a $16.5 million primary health care facility on Palm Island. 

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said the project would not only lead to better and expanded services for Palm Island residents but would also provide the region with a significant economic boost.

“The schematic designs for the Palm Island Primary Health Care Centre are almost complete and we anticipate work to begin in 2017,” she said.

“This is a major health infrastructure project that will generate up to 34 construction jobs as well as additional health positions once complete

“It will also increase access to health services for Palm Island residents so they can receive timely, appropriate and compassionate care closer to home.”

Deputy Premier Jackie Trad said when complete, the facility would mark a win for the health of Palm Island residents.

“Our government is determined to ensure Queenslanders have access to modern, quality health facilities wherever they live, including Palm Island,” he said.

“This project is just another demonstration of that commitment, and one which will make a difference to the lives and health of Palm Island residents.”

Townsville Hospital and Health Board Chair Tony Mooney said the health service had been working closely with the Palm Island Aboriginal Shire Council in the development of the Primary Care Centre.

“The council and the community on Palm Island have been strong advocates for expanded local care. Wherever possible we are committed to providing health care access close to people’s homes,” he said.

 “In addition to the primary health centre, we’ve refurbished and expanded the capacity of the renal unit and started a mobile clinic van to support the provision of health services in a community setting.”

The facility will provide improved access to general medical services, act as a base for visiting specialists and provide a hub for social and emotional well-being services, dental and maternal and child health. The final mix of services will be informed by the development of the Palm Island Health Action Plan 2016-2021.

The project is funded through $8.5 million from the State Government’s $180 million Significant Regional Infrastructure Projects Program, $4.7 million from the Making Tracks Indigenous Health Investment Strategy and $3.3 million from the Townsville Hospital and Health Service.
