The Honourable Shannon Fentiman

Child Safety Minister Shannon Fentiman today urged parents and carers to undertake the world renowned Triple P – Positive Parenting Program before their children commence Prep.

Speaking to parents at Browns Plains State School, Ms Fentiman said Triple P was an important asset to equip both adults and children for a fulfilling educational experience over the coming years.

“Triple P promotes a nurturing, constructive relationship between parent and child, which translates to more productive outcomes for budding students and teachers,” Ms Fentiman said.

“The good news is that there is still time throughout the remainder of the year or the holiday period to complete a Triple P program.

“This year is particularly important given that 2017 is the first year of compulsory Prep in Queensland and more than 60,000 kids will be making this transition.”

The Palaszczuk Government has provided $6.6 million dollars to give Queensland parents free access to the Triple P program.

So far, around 30,000 parents have signed up for seminars, Triple P Online, one-to-one consultations or small group sessions.

Education Minister Kate Jones said teachers were also enthusiastic about the positive influence of Triple P on the way parents raise their children.

“It makes sense that if a child is well adjusted at home, their ability to perform well at school and interact positively with others will be enhanced,” she said.

Logan MP Linus Power said the program helped mums and dads brush up on their parenting skills ahead of a new school year.

“As a father of three young children, I know we can all learn new parenting skills,” he said.

“The Triple P program helps parents ready their kids for prep and the primary years.”

Triple P Queensland Program Director Carol Markie-Dadds said Triple P and education were a natural combination.

“Years of research proves the best thing a parent can do to set their child up for success in life is to raise them in a positive, nurturing home environment,” she said.

“If your child is starting school next year, it would be great if parents could make time to do Triple P because the evidence shows your child will be happier and healthier as a result.”

Minister Fentiman said parents had nothing to lose by signing up for a 90-minute seminar or Triple P Online course.

“Parents and carers are required to provide school uniforms and books to prepare their kids for school, but it’s just as important for parents to prepare themselves for the school years by learning as much as they can about how to parent effectively,” she said.

Browns Plains State School will host a Triple P parenting seminar on Wednesday, November 23 at 6.00pm. All are welcome to register online at www.triplep-parenting.net.
