The Honourable Bill Byrne

Minister for Justice Michael Keenan and Queensland Minister for Police, Fire and Emergency Services Bill Byrne have announced the activation of disaster assistance in four Queensland communities impacted by flooding which occurred from 13 to 20 September 2016.

Minister Keenan said assistance is being provided through the jointly-funded Commonwealth-State Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements (NDRRA).

“Unfortunately over the past few weeks we have seen severe storms devastate communities across the state,” Mr Keenan said.

“That is why the Australian and Queensland Governments are working closely together to ensure local councils and residents have the support they need to recover from this natural disaster.”

Mr Byrne said four local government areas would receive support.

“Following the considerable rainfall which has brought flooding to western Queensland, assistance is now available in Barcoo, Boulia, Bulloo and Diamantina,” Mr Byrne said.

“Assistance includes support for local and state government agencies to undertake clean-up operations and restore essential infrastructure, such as local roads, that were damaged by the floods.”

Information regarding the assistance available can be found on the Queensland Government’s Disaster Management website at www.disaster.qld.gov.au and at www.disasterassist.gov.au.
