A new, community-focussed website to share updates and information about youth crime issues in Townsville has been launched today.
Minister Assisting the Premier on North Queensland Coralee O’Rourke said the involvement of the community was critical to the success of the Palaszczuk Government’s plan to tackle youth crime in the region.
“Crime is an issue that affects everyone in the community, and no single group or government can work alone to solve it,” Ms O’Rourke said.
“We want to work closely with the community to respond to the issue of youth crime, so today we have launched a new website as another way to better connect the Stronger Communities group directly with the community.
“Through this website, the community will be able to gain greater insight into the work being done by the Stronger Communities group, including case studies of local success stories.
“We also want to give everyone an opportunity to contribute their thoughts and ideas on these issues and how we can all work together to build Townsville into a stronger community as a whole.”
Minister O’Rourke said the website was the latest addition to the State Government’s five-point plan to reduce youth crime and build a strong local community in Townsville.
“We are seeing that the increased police presence on our streets is working, but we recognise this is only one part of the work we need to do.
“While we are encouraging members of the community to become involved, it is essential that they do this in consultation with police, for example, through great initiatives such as Neighbourhood Watch.
“Every day, there are dedicated members of our community out there working to turn the lives of our at-risk young people around.
“Townsville is one of Australia’s most liveable cities. We want everyone to continue feeling safe while they enjoy everything our region has to offer and we celebrate Townsville's 150-year anniversary this year.”
