More than 11,500 individuals and organisations have had their say on how Queensland’s fisheries should be managed.

Public feedback on the Fisheries Green Paper has now closed following an extensive consultation process that will set the direction for future reform.

Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries Leanne Donaldson said the number of submissions during the 12-week consultation demonstrated the passion and interest in the state’s fisheries.

“When I launched the Green Paper in July I said I was sure it would generate a lively debate because fishing is an integral part of the Queensland lifestyle and an important contributor to our economy,” the Minister said.

“I wanted everyone with an interest to have their say and I am very pleased that so many people have done just that.

“Submissions have come from a wide range of stakeholders including recreational and commercial fishers, fish retailers, environmental groups and tourism operators,” the Minister said.

“This diverse audience reflects the importance of our fisheries to a great many people both within and outside of Queensland, and is the reason why this consultation was so important.

“Officers from the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries travelled throughout the state to hear people’s views, including face-to-face meetings with around 220 individuals, and some clear messages were evident.

“Importantly, people acknowledged that Queensland requires a modern approach to fisheries management to ensure our fisheries resources are sustainable, resilient and shared between commercial and recreational fishers.

“The outcomes of this consultation will now present a landmark opportunity to bring about real change to strengthen our fisheries.”

Minister Donaldson said that the completion of the consultation on the Green Paper was just the start of a joint approach to fisheries reform.

“No decisions have been made, and further consultation will occur once the responses are analysed and the government determines its position on the issues raised during consultation.

“I thank everyone who participated in the consultation, and encourage them to continue to be involved in future discussions on fisheries reform in Queensland.”
