Singapore Airlines boosts Brisbane service

New Singapore Airlines flights to Queensland will deliver a $46 million tourism boost to the state with the airline introducing three new flights each week to Brisbane from late May. 

Acting Minister for Tourism and Major Events Shannon Fentiman today said Singapore Airlines would add three additional flights a week, with the aim of increasing the service to daily from September.

“This is great news for Queensland tourism with the extra service potentially delivering up to 104,000 extra seats each year,” Ms Fentiman said.

“Supported through the Attracting Aviation Investment Fund (AAIF), these extra flights will mean up to $46 million in additional annual overnight visitor expenditure.

“This builds frequency between Brisbane and Singapore, a major international aviation hub, and strengthens aviation access between Brisbane and key international source markets.”

Ms Fentiman said the new Singapore-Brisbane Airbus 330-300 flight would take the total number of Singapore Airline plane arrivals to 24 each week, delivering visitors from key international markets.

“Singapore Airlines already operate three daily services to Brisbane and this additional service will operate three-times a week with the potential for more flights later in the year,” she said.

“The airline’s extensive route network provides aviation access to the majority of Queensland’s major tourism source markets.

“In particular, the service will bring additional visitors from Singapore, the United Kingdom, China and India.”

Singapore Airlines Regional Vice President South West Pacific Mr Tiow Kor Tan said the addition of the fourth flight was due to the strength of the Brisbane market over the past 12 months.

“Across the South West Pacific region we have experienced good loads and Brisbane has certainly been one of the stronger performers,” Mr Tan said.

“The decision to install a scheduled fourth flight is a reflection of our commitment to Queensland and will ensure we are providing more options for our passengers.”

Brisbane Airport Corporation (BAC) CEO and Managing Director Julieanne Alroe welcomed the news saying Singapore Airlines is an important hub carrier for Brisbane Airport.

“Each year Singapore Airlines carries more than half a million passengers to and from Brisbane, reinforcing its presence as a major contributor to Queensland tourism, especially considering its network breadth of 52 destinations world-wide,” Ms Alroe said.

“I congratulate Singapore Airlines on its significant contribution and commitment to Queensland over the years. It’s one of Brisbane Airport’s longest serving airlines, having commenced flying to Brisbane in 1984 and is currently Brisbane Airport’s fourth largest international carrier.”
