The Palaszczuk Labor Government is continuing to deliver on its commitment to boost frontline services with 89 new police recruits ready to hit the beat across Queensland from today.

Police Minister Jo-Ann Miller and Commissioner Ian Stewart welcomed the new officers to the Queensland Police Service (QPS) at a special ceremony at the QPS Academy in Oxley this afternoon.

“Welcoming new faces to the QPS is one of my favourite duties as Police Minister. These new officers have worked tirelessly over the last 25 weeks to prepare for the great responsibility that comes with being sworn in as a Queensland police officer,” Minister Miller said.

“Policing is a difficult and often dangerous job. It takes a very special kind of person to choose a career that can mean having to make life and death decisions, sometimes at the drop of a hat.

“I am extremely proud the new officers we are welcoming here today. I know they will strive each and every day to uphold the highest levels of integrity, professionalism and accountability that the Government and the people of Queensland expect from their police.”

Of the 89 new recruits, 33 First Year Constables (FYCs) will be posted to the Brisbane Region, 13 to the Central Region, 24 to the Northern Region, 14 to the South Eastern Region and 4 to the Southern Region.

These allocations are based on the resources, needs and requirements of the Service.

Commissioner Ian Stewart congratulated the new First Year Constables on their graduation.

“I remember my induction ceremony well and I hope that this afternoon’s ceremony is a memory that each First Year Constable carries with them throughout a long and successful career within the QPS,” Commissioner Stewart said.

“The role of a police officer is like no other – responsible for the safety and security of Queensland and its citizens.

“There is no doubt that each of these new officers will experience some challenging situations. However, there will also be many rewarding and humbling times.

“I extend best wishes to every new officer in their career and feel confident that they will uphold the QPS standards of excellence and service.”

Minister Miller said the Palaszczuk Government was delivering on its election commitment to deliver 266 extra police over the next year.
