The Palaszczuk Government is to spend $1.03 million to expand and skill up the Queensland workforce ahead of the introduction of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).

Disability Services Minister Coralee O’Rourke today announced the State Government’s support for the sector-led Queensland NDIS Workforce Strategy, at a National Disability Services (NDS) NDIS briefing in Brisbane.

Minister O’Rourke said the strategy was a good example of the partnership between the disability sector and the Queensland Government.

“The strategy was developed through a consortium of peak bodies including Health and Community Services Workforce Council, Community Services Industry Alliance, Queensland Council of Social Service (QCOSS) and NDS,” she said.

“These organisations know what needs to happen on the ground to get the workforce ready for these opportunities and challenges.

“The NDIS will not only improve the lives of people with disability, but create jobs in the disability sector and entrepreneurial opportunities in the broader community.”

Minister O’Rourke said the NDIS would generate approximately 13,000 jobs across the state, creating a great opportunity for people to establish a career within the disability sector.

“This unprecedented growth provides great opportunities for those who are looking for work or for a career change,” she said.

“The workforce strategy will focus on strengthening the current workforce as well as growing it to meet future demands.

“Through the strategy, Queenslanders will have the opportunity to access training and support that will help build their skills and knowledge around the NDIS and the disability sector.

“We will be looking for support workers, allied health professionals, administration personnel, marketing and business experts - the possibilities are endless.”

Minister O’Rourke said the Palaszczuk Government was proud to invest in a workforce that would provide solutions to meet the diverse needs of people with disability.
