Four of the world’s top-ranked tennis players have signed on for Brisbane International 2016, including 17-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer who is back to defend his title.

Minister for Tourism and Major Events Kate Jones said the world’s best tennis players would grace Pat Rafter Arena for Brisbane International 2016 from 3-10 January.

“It’s fantastic to have both Roger Federer and Maria Sharapova return to Brisbane to defend their titles,” Ms Jones said.

“Both have a legion of fans who’ll travel to Queensland in January to see them compete among an elite field of local and international tennis stars.

“The pair will be joined by World No. 4 Kei Nishikori and Queensland’s home-grown hero Sam Stosur who have also signed on to play, with more big names to follow.”

Ms Jones said the Brisbane International was a highlight on Queensland’s events calendar, attracting a total attendance of more than 100,000 earlier this year.

“The Palaszczuk Government is proud to support Brisbane International 2016,” she said.

“Events like this play a vital role in promoting Queensland’s destinations, driving visitation, creating jobs and fostering community pride.”

Roger Federer said he was excited to return, especially after this year’s win and the 1000th match win milestone – a picture perfect moment.

“I’m coming back maybe with a little bit more pressure next year having to defend [the title], but I’ve played there two years now and it’s gone so well,” Federer said.

Brisbane International Tournament Director Cameron Pearson said tennis fans could look forward to more world-class tennis in Brisbane this summer.

“Fans have really embraced this tournament, with record crowds in attendance for the past two years. We expect another strong crowd in 2016 and encourage fans to buy their tickets early to ensure they don’t miss out,” Pearson said.

Brisbane International presented by Suncorp will be held at the Queensland Tennis Centre in Tennyson from 3-10 January 2016. Tickets are now on sale.
