Queensland’s newest urban firefighters are ready to serve their communities after graduating from the School of Fire and Emergency Services Training today.

The 14 Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) firefighters will be stationed across the state, taking up positions in Brisbane, Ipswich, Beenleigh, Gold Coast, Mount Isa, Mackay and Innisfail.

Fire and Emergency Services Minister Jo-Ann Miller congratulated the firefighter recruits at their graduation ceremony at the Queensland Combined Emergency Services Academy in Lytton.

“The state’s newest firefighters are embarking on challenging careers dedicated to protecting the lives and property of Queenslanders,” Minister Miller said.

“They bring a range of skills to QFES, coming from a variety of backgrounds including past careers in government and the private sector.

“The diverse group of firefighter recruits includes former nurses, police officers, and sportspeople.”

QFES Commissioner Katarina Carroll said the firefighter recruits had undergone a demanding training program.

“The recruits have completed 72 days of training and will continue their studies over the next two and a half years,” Ms Carroll said.

“They’ve met the high standards expected by QFES and their passion for serving their communities is clear.

“The firefighting profession welcomes their diverse skills and commitment to keeping Queenslanders safe.”

The recruits have been equipped with skills in areas including fire, road crash rescue, technical rescue and managing hazardous materials.

Two women are among the 14 recruit firefighters, who are the third group to graduate so far this year.

Minister Miller said ensuring the safety and wellbeing of all Queenslanders was a top priority.

“Unlike the LNP, we’re committed to boosting frontline services across Queensland. Today’s 14 new firefighters is just one we’re delivering on that commitment.”
