Queensland Government community recovery efforts in Rockhampton after Tropical Cyclone Marcia are winding down as the community gets back on its feet.

Communities Minister Shannon Fentiman said the Community Recovery Referral and Information Centre (CRICC) in Rockhampton had closed this week because of a significant drop in demand.

“The centre’s closure is in itself a testament to the many affected people who have turned a corner and are getting back to their day-to-day lives after the havoc of TC Marcia. I’m so pleased to see the community is truly recovering,” Ms Fentiman said.

“More than $7m was provided to more than 33,500 Rockhampton residents following TC Marcia.

"This funding largely went towards helping people get back on their feet and purchase essential items such as food, clothing and accommodation.”

Member for Keppel, Brittany Lauga, said support was still available for people who were struggling with the effects of TC Marcia.

“Help is still there if people need it, including means-tested grants to help people get essential household items or to repair damage caused by the cyclone and help ensure their home is structurally safe,” Ms Lauga said.

“People who still need advice and assistance can phone the Community Recovery Hotline on 1800 173 349 or contact the Department of Communities Regional Service Centre in Rockhampton.”

Grants available to eligible people include means and income-tested Essential Household Contents Grants, Structural Assistance Grants and Essential Services Safety Reconnection Scheme Grants. The CRRIC has been operating at Archer Street since 16 March 2015.

Community Recovery Hubs set up to provide immediate assistance in the days after the cyclone transitioned in March to CRRICs located in Yeppoon, Rockhampton and Biloela.

Over the last four months the centres have provided information and support to more than 2,000 people by telephone, email, home visits and public meetings.
