As rural firefighters in Severnlea West near Stanthorpe prepare for the 2015 bushfire season, their job will be made that little bit easier with a new fire brigade station, which they helped fund and build.

Member for Ferny Grove, Mark Furner, officially opened the new $70,000 station today on behalf of the Minister for Police, Fire and Emergency Services and Minister for Corrective Services, Jo- Ann Miller.

The facility was funded through a $25,000 Station Construction Grant from the Rural Fire Service Queensland, a $10,000 grant from Southern Downs Regional Council, with the remaining $35,000 delivered by the fundraising efforts of brigade members.

“It stands as a tangible reminder of what can be achieved when a community pulls together,” Mr Furner said.

At the opening, Mr Furner paid tribute to the rural fire volunteers for their drive, determination and dedication.

“Your job is not nine to five. It’s not easy. It can often be dangerous. For that, we owe you a huge debt of gratitude.

“As we approach the bushfire season, your work is more important than ever. I know the community counts on you and I trust this new station will make it that little bit easier for you to do what you do best – to look after community when disaster strikes,” Mr Furner said.

Ms Katarina Carroll, QFES Commissioner said the station would be of great benefit to the brigade’s 51 volunteers who serve Severnlea and surrounds.

“The new station provides storage for the brigade’s medium attack fire appliance and firefighting equipment.

“As well as safely storing equipment, the station provides a central meeting point for volunteers.

“Brigade members are ordinary people doing extraordinary things to keep their community safe, whether it’s conducting hazard reduction burns, responding to grass, bush or building fires, or responding to road crashes.

“The valuable service they provide is of particular importance as we enter another bushfire season.

“It’s vital that residents are prepared for the threat of fire. It’s important for everyone to know what steps to take to ‘Prepare, Act and Survive’ if their home is threatened by fire. A bushfire survival plan is a must,” Ms Carroll said.
