Participants in the Indigenous Youth Leadership Camp graduated today armed with a new set of skills and heightened confidence.

Treasurer and Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships Curtis Pitt attended their graduation at International House this morning.

“Now in its fourth year the camp has grown to become one of International House’s hallmark leadership development programs and certainly aligns with International House’s vision to “cultivate connected, effective and compassionate young leaders for a global community,” Mr Pitt said.

“The Indigenous Youth Leadership Camp is a vital support that helps young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders continue their secondary school studies and into higher education and meaningful employment.

“This program is a shining example of positive engagement for participants and International House students alike, to develop personal and professional skills.

“This week has certainly been a successful opportunity for participants to reflect on their future aspirations, exploring educational pathways, developing capacity and leadership skills and fostering networks which will assist them in becoming the next generation of leaders.

“It’s fantastic to see this cross-cultural leadership program being continued by International House and its supporters, bringing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander high school students together from across a range of communities.

“The Indigenous Youth Leadership Camp aligns with the Queensland Government’s commitment to give all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students a chance to acquire the education and skills they need to compete equally for jobs in the mainstream workforce and gain meaningful employment."

Organisers and supporters of the Indigenous Youth Leadership Camp include Davies Project for Peace, I-House New York, the University of Queensland, Rotary International, Arrow Energy and the individual sponsors.
