A new wave of local startups could be discovered at the Brisbane Startup Weekend on 10-12 July.

Minister for Science and Innovation Leeanne Enoch said startup events provide opportunities for creative individuals to turn their bright ideas into reality.

“Startup Weekends can be the catalyst for a new generation of success stories, by bringing together entrepreneurs and mentors to develop fresh ideas and innovations,” Ms Enoch said.

“Nurturing startups is vital to support the diversification, growth and development of Queensland’s knowledge economy.

“By encouraging world-leading thinking, we also continue to strengthen the state’s position on the world map as a knowledge hub.”

Startup Weekends are community-driven events that challenge participants to launch a new product or service in 54 hours by providing a forum for participants to pitch their ideas, form teams, test their business model and create a prototype with expert support.

The Brisbane event is supported through the Government’s Startup Queensland fund and is hosted by River City Labs.

The Startup Queensland fund is aimed at building capability within the Queensland startup community by supporting activities which deliver collaboration and networking opportunities, connectivity and transformational entrepreneurship.

“The Startup Weekend has the potential to develop products and services that could transform industries, not just in Queensland, but around the world,” Ms Enoch said.

“It is essential for Queensland’s economy that industries embrace the startup culture not only to improve existing businesses, but create new businesses and the jobs that come with them.

“If you have a startup idea – big or small – I encourage you to attend the Startup Weekend and gain valuable insight into the development of your idea.”

The Brisbane Startup Weekend is being held from Friday 10 July to Sunday 12 July, and will take place at River City Labs, Fortitude Valley. To register visit http://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/startup-weekend-brisbane-swbne15-tickets-17238438634
