Gold Coast channel dredging to be reviewed

Queensland Ports Minister Mark Bailey has requested an independent review into plans to dredge a Gold Coast channel.

Mr Bailey has held talks with the Gold Coast Waterways Authority and the Australian Live-aboard Association on plans to dredge the Labrador Channel and change mooring arrangements for boat residents.

“I want to make sure that all critical issues with this project have been fully assessed by a third party reviewer,” he said.

"It's all about ensuring all voices and all issues are heard and fully considered.”

Mr Bailey said current plans to deepen the channel in July have been put on hold as environmental, safety, waterways planning and community matters were reviewed.

“It is clear there remains a lack of consensus on this issue,” he said.

Mr Bailey has asked the Authority to extend the existing mooring contract until tenders are sought.

Tenderers will be asked to propose toilet and shower facilities for existing live-aboard residents.

“We want to ensure that the outcome is in everyone’s best interests,” he said.
