Minister for Health and Minister for Ambulance Services
The Honourable Cameron Dick

Minister for Health Cameron Dick today opened a new state-of-the-art health care facility at The Prince Charles Hospital on Brisbane’s northside which will mean improved care for patients living with cancer.

The new facility is a modern, purpose built centre providing care to patients with a range of conditions including lung and bowel cancer.

Mr Dick said the new Cancer Care Services facility will improve the journey of our patients, which is an important priority for our health care system.

“While there have been cancer facilities at the hospital they have been scattered around the campus, but this facility is a ‘one-stop-shop’ that provides patients access to all necessary oncology services in one single location, including day oncology, radiation oncology and haematology clinics,” Mr Dick said.

“The ability to provide the full range of services to patients in one location means staff can spend more hours in the day providing hands on care and support to patients.”

Director of TPCH’s Oncology Service, Associate Professor Brett Hughes said that patients who visit the Cancer Care facility require a range of services due to the nature of their clinical condition.

“For example, when a patient visits here, they may require a blood test, allied health assessment or use of our satellite pharmacy, in addition to seeing their specialist and receiving chemotherapy.

“Prior to the new facility, patients had to travel to different locations throughout the hospital to obtain these services, this arrangement was not ideal.

“This facility makes it far easier for the patient and means they can be in a modern environment to receive their care.”

The service also runs an internationally recognised cancer care research centre specialising in thoracic malignancies which supports TPCH’s longstanding reputation of excellence in clinical care and research, particularly in the lung and heart specialties.
