Queensland motorists are being urged to make a survival pledge as part of Fatality Free Friday.

Main Roads and Road Safety Minister Mark Bailey said the May 29 event was about showing how road safety is everyone’s responsibility.

“We all need to work together to make our roads safer every day of the year. I can’t stress this strongly enough – slow down, wear a seat belt, and for goodness sake don’t drink and drive or keep driving if you are tired.

“I want Queenslanders to remember the road safety message every time they are on the road.”

Mr Bailey is encouraging all Queensland motorists to pledge their support for the Australian Road Safety Foundations’ Fatality Free Friday by making a road safety pledge online.

Minister for Police, Fire and Emergency Services Jo-Ann Miller said while Fatality Free Friday was a unique opportunity for motorists to reflect on their own driving behaviours, police were out in force on Queensland roads every day.

“It doesn’t matter what day of the week it is, local police as well as officers from our dedicated Road Policing Command are always out patrolling our roads in an effort to keep Queenslanders safe,” Minister Miller said.

“But for many, the road safety message is still not sinking in. Every day police are having to take enforcement action against drivers who continue to put their lives, as well as the lives of innocent Queenslanders, at risk.

“There’s a reason we talk about the ‘fatal five’ – and that’s because if you speed, drive under the influence of drugs or alcohol, drive tired, use your mobile phone behind the wheel or forget to put your seatbelt on – you greatly increase the chance of a crash. They are still by far the most common causes of road fatalities in Queensland.

“Please take a moment to think about how your driving habits could change the life of someone else in an instant.”

Fatality Free Friday coincides with the Queensland Government’s road safety strategy, ‘Join the Drive to Save Lives’, which is all about community interaction. For those who cannot make the roadshow, pledges can be made online at www.fatalityfreefriday.com
