CITEC will remain a Queensland Government-owned information and communication technology (ICT) provider and will reshape its business to deliver jobs of the future and high quality services to its customers.

Visiting staff on site today Science and Innovation Minister Leeanne Enoch said the previous Government’s decision to divest CITEC was not proceeding, and the focus now was to work with CITEC management, staff, government and commercial clients to build a future-proof business model.

“The Queensland Government is a key driver in developing a strong and vibrant digital economy and I want CITEC to have a role in that,” she said.

“To do this we need to develop an innovative business model that ensures it is efficient, sustainable and provides excellent service.”

Minister Enoch said the Queensland Government was committed to employment security for public servants and keeping CITEC in the hands of Queenslanders.

“The decision to keep CITEC in public ownership provides certainty for its 344 full time equivalent employees, as well as security for its government and commercial customers,” she said.

Ms Enoch said the Department of Science, Information Technology and Innovation will consult with employees and stakeholders to develop options for a new operating model for CITEC into the future.

“We will explore all options in order to develop the best business model to continue to deliver savings for Queenslanders and a financially viable business,” she said.

“While there will be no job losses we will need a strategy to ensure that staff continue to grow their skills in order to meet changing technology and customer needs so that they can deliver ICT services now and into the future.”

Significant transformations have already started in CITEC’s two business units, ICT and Information Brokerage.

Mainframe upgrades have already delivered clients with efficiency gains of around 30%, including savings of $1.5 million over three years to the Department of Transport and Main Roads.

Improvements are also delivering lower costs on a number of services, including in data storage and protection which has reduced costs to Government of more than $12 million over three years.

CITEC provides data centre services, infrastructure server management, network services, data storage management and protection, solutions integration and support to government and private sector clients.
