Local maritime legend Len Foxcroft could have his name preserved on a local headland.

Natural Resources and Mines Minister Dr Anthony Lynham today announced public submissions were open on a proposal to name a new Foxcroft Headland in the Daintree National Park about 110 kilometres north of Cairns.

“Len Foxcroft was a highly-respected mariner who dedicated his life to the promotion and education of safe maritime practices to Indigenous crew ,” Dr Lynham said.

“This proposal fittingly highlights the contribution he made throughout his life and career as a pilot and skipper of various lighthouse vessels from Mackay to Darwin.

“Naming the headland in his honour would acknowledge Mr Foxcroft’s significant maritime-related links to Queensland’s north east coastal waters.”

Organisations including the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority and the Australian Hydrographic Office have already indicated their support for the proposal.

Submissions are open until 29 July 2015.
