The locality of Kalinga could be about to step up a grade and officially become a suburb.

Natural Resources and Mines Minister Dr Anthony Lynham today announced the start of public consultation on the proposal for a new suburb of Kalinga.

“Kalinga has been an unbounded locality within Wooloowin since 1975 when boundaries for Brisbane suburbs were officially gazetted,” he said.

“The Kalinga Wooloowin Residents Association first kicked off the idea and now is the time for locals to have their say.

“Despite not being an official suburb, Kalinga has maintained its identity with the name used by a number of organizations and businesses including the Kalinga Scouts, Kalinga Park Veterinary Surgery, and Brisbane City Council bus route, 321.

“The proposal taps into that sense of community and has been supported by residents, prominent members of the community, and businesses and community groups including Brisbane City Council and the Nundah and District Historical Society.”

The name Kalinga reportedly derives from the Aboriginal word ngalinnga which means ‘belonging to us’. The proposal involves altering the boundaries of the suburbs of Wooloowin and Clayfield and transferring 962 lots from those suburbs to create the new suburb.

Submissions close on 29 July 2015.
