Premier and Arts Minister Annastacia Palaszczuk today announced Cameron Mackintosh’s acclaimed new production of Les Misérables is coming to Brisbane in November for a season at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC).

Les Misérables, with more than 100 awards to its name, is one of the world’s most popular musicals and has been seen by more than 70 million people worldwide,” Ms Palaszczuk said.

“It is fitting for QPAC to see out its 30th anniversary year with the return of a blockbuster musical which coincidentally is also celebrating its 30th anniversary following its London debut in 1985.”

The Premier said the production of Les Misérables promised a new take on the classic, with new sets, costumes and scenery.

“This provides a new way for audiences to rediscover one of the world’s favourite musicals, which was a hit for QPAC twice before in 1991 and 1999,” she said.

More than 40 per cent of QPAC’s 1.2 million visitors each year come to see a musical theatre performance.

The Premier said the presentation of top musicals helped QPAC deliver direct cultural tourism benefits and economic returns for the state, and contributed to the success of the Cultural Precinct which tracked about 4.7 million visits in 2013-2014.

“For 30 years, QPAC has welcomed more than 20 million visitors to around 26,000 performances,” she said.

“With this production of Les Misérables in November, we can expect to welcome thousands more.”

Tickets go on sale on Thursday 21 May. For tickets and further information on QPAC events go to: www.qpac.com.au
