No Townsville Stadium under State, Federal LNP

The State LNP have backed their Federal mates’ decision not to fund a Townsville Stadium, back flipping from their own election commitment and ignoring community support for the new facility.

Minister Assisting the Premier on North Queensland and Mundingburra MP Coralee O’Rourke called on the State and Federal LNP to listen to Townsville residents, who overwhelmingly voted for the new CBD stadium at the last election.

“Labor has pledged $100 million towards developing a new CBD stadium in Townsville, and that’s what we are going to deliver,” Mrs O’Rourke said.

“The LNP went to the last State election in support of a stadium, but their $150 million commitment hinged on the sale of the state’s assets,” she said.

“In an astounding backflip, today we heard John-Paul Langbroek on radio in support of the Federal LNP not funding the stadium, claiming there is dissent in Townsville.

“This is another example of the LNP arrogance we have come to know – failing to listen to what North Queenslanders actually want.

“That’s because the LNP’s idea of consulting with North Queenslanders is gathering 130 of their members in a room for a paid party lunch, which they called 'Latitudes North'.

“The only thing north focussed about the political fundraiser was the name.”

Minister O’Rourke said Mr Langbroek’s comments were another blow to North Queensland, following Tuesday’s Federal Budget that left the region completely overlooked.

“Why hasn’t the Federal Government matched Premier Palaszczuk’s commitment to Townsville’s $210 million stadium?

“The truth is Joe Hockey isn’t serious about regional infrastructure, and neither is John-Paul Langbroek.

“I will continue to fight for North Queensland to ensure residents get the stadium they want and they deserve.”
