Minister for Health and Minister for Ambulance Services
The Honourable Cameron Dick

Health Minister Cameron Dick is proud to support Queensland’s frontline health workforce by opening the inaugural Nursing and Midwifery Leadership and Workforce Conference in Brisbane today.

Nurses and midwives from across the country have come together at Metro North Hospital and Health Service’s Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital to hear from leading speakers who are at the forefront of their professions and explore emerging issues and debate new developments.

Minister Dick said it was timely with International Nurses Day tomorrow, that the event was a celebration of nurses and midwives and their commitment to lifelong learning.

“Nurses and midwives are the backbone of our healthcare system,” Mr. Dick said.

“My mother trained and worked as a nurse so I have an insight into the challenging work that our nurses face each and every day.

“Our nurses and midwives fully understand that healthcare is a dynamic and changing environment and continuing professional development helps our workforce meet the needs of today and tomorrow.”

Metro North Hospital and Health Service Executive Director Nursing and Midwifery Services Adjunct Associate Professor Alanna Geary said the conference was an exciting opportunity to showcase the collective skills and knowledge of nurses and midwives.

“Attendees have the opportunity to share information and their experiences and to learn from world renowned researchers and colleagues,” Adj. Assoc.  Prof. Geary said.

“Today’s healthcare environment holds many challenges and nurses and midwives will play a major role in meeting those challenges.

“We need to ensure we have an appropriately skilled and knowledgeable workforce, and nurse leaders who can inform, manage and lead clinical care.”

The Key to the Future: Unlocking Nursing and Midwifery Leadership and Workforce is being held 11–12 May at the Education Centre at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital, Herston.

Key presenters include Ita Buttrose AO OBE, Professor Glenn Gardner and international guests Professor Lillie Shortridge-Baggett and Tine Hansen Turton.
