The Honourable Steven Miles

Tourism Minister Kate Jones and Environment and Heritage Protection Minister Steven Miles today invited Queenslanders to visit the state’s historic war memorials using driving itineraries available at www.queensland.com

Minister Jones said the special Anzac itineraries covered 90 Queensland war memorials across 12 suggested drive routes, including many on the Queensland Heritage Register.

“Taking the time stop and view a war memorial can be a moving and worthwhile experience,” Ms Jones said.

“Queensland’s war memorials are a focal point for people to reflect and remember the service and sacrifice of our servicemen and women.

“Each site tells a story of the different military campaigns undertaken by Australia and offers a place to remember and understand the courage and determination of the many Australians who gave their lives to build this country.”

Minister Miles said Anzac Day was an integral part of Queensland’s heritage.

“Anzac Day is not only a time to honour those who fought to protect our country, it also provides an opportunity to reflect on our history,” Dr Miles said.

“The Department of Environment and Heritage Protection is committed to protecting places of significance in our state, with more than 1700 places listed in the Queensland Heritage Register.

“Important sites such as war memorials trace the history of our growth and help us revive important stories from the past.

“War memorials play an important role in commemorating Australia’s involvement in the First World War and in demonstrating the pattern of Queensland’s military history.

“I would encourage everyone to take part in Anzac Day on Saturday, and if you get a chance, to visit one of the war memorials across the state.”

Dr Miles said the memorial drive project was developed in collaboration with Department of Tourism, Major Events, Small Business and the Commonwealth Games, Department of Environment and Heritage Protection and Tourism and Events Queensland.
