The next round of cycle safety upgrades on the Captain Cook Highway at Trinity Beach and Kewarra Beach roundabouts are expected to start tonight (21 April).

Main Roads and Road Safety Minister Mark Bailey said the $914,000 project was a continuation of recent upgrades at the Machans Beach, Holloways Beach, Yorkeys Knob and Smithfield roundabouts to enhance safety for cyclists.

Member for Barron River Craig Crawford said while the upgrades may be less than convenient for motorists, the work was important to ensure the safety of cyclists along the popular route.

“The aim of the upgrade is to provide a physical barrier between cyclists and motorists at the two roundabouts.”

“Past experience has shown that many motorists were entering the cycle lane to reach a higher speed as they made their way out of the roundabout.

“The concrete barrier encourages drivers to slow to a more suitable speed and offers more protection for cyclists on this busy, high-speed road.

“Many locals will remember the tragic accident involving a cyclist at the Trinity Beach roundabout in 2009. These works will go a long way towards preventing another tragedy from occurring on this popular route.”

Mr Crawford said Transport and Main Roads crews would carry out works during the night to limit the impact on traffic flow. The works are expected to be completed by the end of May, weather permitting.

Drivers are being urged to obey any new road signs in place and to be mindful of the presence of road workers on the road at night.

“The Captain Cook Highway is one of the busiest roads in Cairns, particularly during morning and afternoon peak traffic times.

“It’s safer for road workers when these works are carried out at night as there are fewer cars on the road.

“Residents may experience some additional noise associated with the road work, and I thank them for their patience and understanding while these works are being undertaken.”
