Recreational boaties now have improved access to the Burnett River at Fairymead, north of Bundaberg, with a new boat ramp and facilities officially opened today.

Main Roads, Road Safety and Ports Minister Mark Bailey said the new two-lane boat ramp, along with 45 car-trailer parking spaces were ready for boaties keen to head out onto the water over the Easter break.

Member for Bundaberg, Leanne Donaldson, who represented the Minister at the opening, said the new facilities couldn’t have come at a better time.

“It’s great news for local boaties and visitors to the region. This has been an important project for our local community,” Ms Donaldson said.

“As well as providing an alternative location for boaties to access the river from the north bank, the new boat ramp will ease congestion at nearby ramps,” she said.

Ms Donaldson said the Queensland Government contributed $316,000 towards the project, with the Bundaberg Regional Council providing $360,000 for parking, access roads, amenities and landscaping.

“It’s a great example of what can be achieved for the local community when two tiers of government work closely together,” Ms Donaldson said.

Bundaberg Regional Council Mayor Mal Forman was pleased council was able to help deliver the important project.

“The opening of the new boat ramp facility at Fairymead is a fantastic and long-awaited outcome for the local community,” Councillor Forman said.

“Local boating groups have been calling for this project for many years and I’m pleased recreational fisherman now have another access point along the river.”
