Opposition Leader misleads over drought assistance

Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries and Minister for Sport and Racing
The Honourable Bill Byrne

The LNP left a legacy of cuts in agriculture and it is remarkable that the Leader of the Opposition has issued a media statement today which seems deliberately calculated to create a false impression about the Palaszczuk Government’s commitment to drought assistance.

I’m disappointed that Mr Springborg would attempt to create unnecessary doubt in the minds of our food and fibre producers.

For the Leader of the Opposition’s benefit, and for those who have been left confused by his statement, I will make the position crystal clear.

It was a Labor election commitment to support primary producers in drought by maintaining existing drought relief arrangements until 2018.

I confirmed this commitment from the first day I became Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries and I have repeated it many times including on a visit I made to Emerald, Longreach, Charleville and Quilpie over a month ago.

It seems the Leader of the Opposition has either failed to keep pace with the media cycle and is very poorly advised about the policies of the Palaszczuk Government, or he must be making mischief at the expense of people who deserve better.
