Minister for Tourism, Major Events, Small Business and the Commonwealth Games, Kate Jones, today marked Commonwealth Day with aspiring athletes at Government House.

The event was hosted by The Governor of Queensland, His Excellency the Honourable Paul de Jersey AC.

Minister Jones said that the 2018 Commonwealth Games will bring tremendous benefits to the Gold Coast and inspire a new generation of athletes to work hard and pursue their dreams of competing at an international level.

“We’re almost 3 years out from the Gold Coast Games and it’s great to see so many aspiring athletes excited about the event and training hard so they can make it there to compete,” Minister Jones said.

“I hope to see many of the faces here today again on the Gold Coast in 2018.”

Guests representing all 17 sports on the 2018 program, including para sport, attended the event.

“As we count down to the Games, I cannot think of a more fitting way to mark Commonwealth Day than by celebrating and encouraging our aspiring athletes,” Minister Jones said.

Commonwealth Day is celebrated across the Commonwealth on the second Monday in March every year. It provides an opportunity to promote understanding on global issues, international co-operation and the work of Commonwealth organisations.
