Health Minister Cameron Dick today confirmed that Labor would honour its election commitment to review the funding program that supports non-government community health providers.

Under the LNP, the program was changed to focus on reducing costs to hospitals over vital community-based preventative health services.

“Cynically, Lawrence Springborg and the LNP prioritised cost reduction over vital community-based preventative health services that help Queenslanders,” Mr Dick said.

“This has come as a huge shock to community organisations that generally operate on the smell of an oily rag and the immense goodwill of their members and volunteers.

“Lawrence Springborg and the LNP disregarded the positive health outcomes that these organisations provide just to achieve a short-term cost reduction.”

Mr Dick said binding commitments had been made by the previous LNP Government with new providers until the end of 2016.

“However, we will be reviewing the grants program to consider how best to provide support to preventative health measures in our community,” Mr Dick said.

“If it is possible we will assist these organisations to provide vital services prior to the completion of the current LNP contracts in 2016.”

“There is more to the health portfolio than just hospitals. That’s why the Palaszczuk Government will focus on keeping Queenslanders healthy so they don’t have to visit a hospital.

“Our focus will be on preventative health programs, health promotion, and research and innovation which drive positive health outcomes, ease pressure on the entire health system, and improve the quality of life for all Queenslanders.”
