Extra funding available for victims of crime

Queensland not-for-profit organisations are being encouraged to apply for funding to help better support victims of violent crime.

Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Yvette D’Ath said $100,000 in funding was available to non-government agencies through Victim Assist Queensland (VAQ).

“The Building Capacity Funding Program offers one-off funding for agencies to build their capacity to help victims of crime get their lives back on track and to address gaps in the available services for victims,” Ms D’Ath said.

“Being a victim of violent crime can be an incredibly traumatic and life-changing experience so it is vital that these individuals are able to access the assistance they need through appropriate support agencies.”

Ms D’Ath said the program complemented other initiatives designed to help increase front line services for victims of violent crime.

“The sort of projects which have previously received funding include professional training and resources for workers in the sector, research and development to build new capabilities in local communities, training and recruitment drives for volunteers and development of web-based capabilities,” she said.

“I’d encourage eligible organisations to apply for a share of the funding.”
