Central Queensland: Police, Fire and Emergency Services Minister Jo-Ann Miller is today visiting Rockhampton and Yeppoon to thank the dedicated emergency personnel who have worked around the clock to assist cyclone-hit communities.

Minister Miller said the dedication shown by Queensland Police Service and Queensland Fire and Emergency Services officers, State Emergency Service staff and volunteers as well as support staff from the Public Safety Business Agency has been outstanding.

“Our emergency services are well-versed in this kind of thing, but the level of professionalism and dedication shown during a disaster never ceases to amaze me,” Mrs Miller said.

“I wanted to take this opportunity today to thank our hard-working police, QFES officers and SES volunteers who have literally not stopped since last Thursday night when it became apparent that Cyclone Marcia was becoming extremely dangerous.”

State Member for Rockhampton Bill Byrne also paid tribute to the emergency personnel that helped keep his community safe.

“Not only did they work throughout the cyclone despite considerable danger to themselves, but as soon as it was safe to do so, they were out and about assessing damage, helping to clean up and supporting the community,” Mr Byrne said.

“Just like the rest of us, many officers have had damage to their own homes and yards and have been without power – yet they put the needs of others first.”

State Member for Keppel Brittany Lauga said the presence of extra police and emergency personnel in the region would remain for as long as was necessary.

“It’s going to be a long road ahead for many Central Queenslanders, and I want to reassure the community that the police, QFES and the SES will be up here assisting us for as long as it takes.

“Things won’t go back to normal overnight, but I have no doubt that the community will continue to show that famous fighting Queensland spirit. We will band together and get through this.

“The Palaszczuk Government will be with you every step of the way.”
