Powerlink Queensland delivered two 160 tonne electricity transformers to Yuleba near Roma this week, marking a significant step in the delivery of the state’s multi-billion-dollar gas export industry.

Minister for Energy Mark Bailey said the transformers would be installed at the Yuleba North substation hub and would ultimately connect five high-voltage transmission lines over a 200 kilometre area bounded by Wandoan, Roma, Injune and Taroom.

Mr Bailey, who is also the Minister for Main Roads and Road Safety, said the huge transformers were transported on two, long-load platform trailers from Brisbane, taking several days to cover a journey of more than 630 kilometres.

“It was a major logistical exercise for Powerlink. The convoy slowly and safely made its way through the towns of Dalby, Chinchilla, Miles and Yuleba, with an escort and police vehicles to ensure the safety of road users,” Mr Bailey said.

Powerlink Queensland Chief Executive Merryn York said the transformers were the most significant pieces of equipment needed to complete construction of the substation.

“The overall project involves building seven substations and six transmission lines, and links to the existing network at Wandoan South Substation,” Ms York said.

“Powerlink undertook extensive consultation with the local community and stakeholders, and will continue to work closely with landholders as part of the current construction work.”

Minister for Natural Resources and Mines, Dr Anthony Lynham said the substation would support the CSG/LNG industry in the Surat Basin.

“The Surat Basin is the engine room for the growing CSG/LNG industry. It’s generating thousands of jobs and is a significant contributor to the state’s economy,” Dr Lynham said.
