Minister for Main Roads, Road Safety and Ports and Minister for Energy and Water Supply
The Honourable Mark Bailey

The safety of motorists will be enhanced on the Centenary Motorway with 15 electronic speed limit signs set to be switched on this week.

Main Roads and Road Safety Minister Mark Bailey said the new electronic signage would enhance driver safety, traffic flow and congestion on the busy motorway.

“Static speed limit signs will be replaced with electronic signage along a three kilometre section of the highway between Sumners Road, Sumner and the Brisbane River at Jindalee,” Mr Bailey said.

“These electronic signs will operate around-the-clock to help motorists respond to changing traffic conditions, such as vehicle breakdowns, congestion and the impact of bad weather.”

The speed limits on the electronic signs are legally enforceable and Mr Bailey is urging motorists to obey the electronic signage on display to avoid speeding fines and to ensure their safety and that of other road users.

The Minister said in-road detectors and sensors would continually monitor traffic to detect motorway conditions.

“Traffic management staff are able to monitor CCTV footage of real-time conditions and change the speed limits in the interests of safety,” he said.

“This initiative is designed to reduce the number of rear-end collisions and other traffic incidents by slowing down vehicle speeds as drivers approach vehicle break-downs and major traffic congestion.”
