New specialist rehabilitation and surgical facilities for Herston Quarter

A new 132-bed specialist rehabilitation centre will be built as part of the multi-million dollar Herston Quarter redevelopment as part of the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital.

Treasurer Curtis Pitt and Minister for Employment and Member for Brisbane Central Grace Grace announced the new Specialist Rehabilitation and Ambulatory Care Centre on site today.

Mr Pitt said the centre would have 100 rehabilitation beds and special purpose rehabilitation support areas.

“There will also be a surgical and endoscopic centre with seven operating theatres, three endoscopy rooms, recovery spaces and a 32 bed surgical unit,” Mr Pitt said.

“It means Queenslanders will have access to a new state-of-the-art specialist rehabilitation facility, as well as endoscopy and surgical facilities.

“It’s part of the Herston Quarter redevelopment which will deliver a world-class health, bio-medical, retail and accommodation precinct including medical services and cutting-edge research.”

The new Specialist Rehabilitation and Ambulatory Care Centre will be funded by the State Government.

Two consortia, Frasers Property (formerly Australand) with Australian Unity, and Lend Lease with Trinity Health, are currently developing proposals for the five-hectare Herston Quarter site.

Health Minister Cameron Dick said the successful proponent is expected to be announced in the middle of 2016.

“This development will complement the Palaszczuk Government’s record spending on reliable, high-quality health care,” Minister Dick said.

“Given the proximity to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital, coupled with outstanding access and transport options, it makes perfect sense to include these health facilities with the Herston Quarter redevelopment.

“This will continue the tradition of health services provided at the site.”

Ms Grace said the new specialist centre was a great outcome for the local community.

“Another unique feature of this redevelopment will be the adaptive re-use of some outstanding heritage buildings used to provide health services and nursing accommodation from as early as 1896,” she said.

“We have listened to the community and health providers and the centre has been shaped by these views.

“The end result will be a world-class mixed-use development reflecting the historical significance of the site.”
